National Nurses Week Book Display

The Sullivan Family Library's National Nurses Week book display.

May 6th is a special day at the Sullivan Family Library because it is the day we kick off the week-long celebration of National Nurses Week!  Running from May 6th to 12th, this is a special time where we can show our appreciation for the valuable role that nurses play in the American healthcare industry.

This year's Nurses Week theme: 4 Million Reasons to Celebrate

to honor the 4 million registered nurses in America.

Long days and late nights are common to nurses who spend their work hours on their feet caring for and supporting their patients yet they are often the unsung heroes of the medical field. Our librarians have cultivated a special collection of books on nursing and pioneers in the field to help celebrate National Nurses Week and highlight the important role nurses play in healthcare and the prevention of disease.

National Nurses Week culminates with the honoring of Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing, whose birth date was May 12, 1820 in Florence, Italy. Born into an upper-middle class and well-connected family, she went against her parent's wishes and enrolled in a 3-month nursing education program in Dusseldorf, Germany because she felt it was her God-chosen profession to become a nurse. Upon completing the program, Nightingale returned to Britain where she worked as a superintendent of a hospital that catered to "gentlewomen". Throughout her career, her policies on record keeping, sanitation, and statistical analysis changed nursing and laid the groundwork for systematic change in the design and practice of nursing today.

Celebrating May Day

As May Day approaches, the Chaminade University of Honolulu librarians wanted to share more about this special day and offer some suggestions from our collection to give more context and meaning to your celebration.

Begun in 1929, May Day (held annually on May 1st) is a celebration of spring, of Hawaiian culture, and of the Hawaiian value of aloha -- love and compassion. On this day, it is common for people to exchange lei as symbol of their love and friendship, for public celebrations to be held surrounding the beauty of lei, and even contents where participants create lavish lei to battle against their competitors.

The tradition of exchanging lei is believed to have arrived to the Hawaiian islands with Tahitian settlers who exchanged garlands of maile lei during peace agreements between opposing parties. Lei was also worn in Tahitian society to show membership of a group.  Today, lei are often exchanged between friends and family members as unspoken signs of aloha between people. Below is a select list of books related to lei customs and May Day for you to enjoy.

This flip book explores the connection of May Day between England and Hawaii -- its origins, how it is celebrated in each place, and modern activities in the May Day section of the book while the Lei Day section discusses the importance of lei in Hawaiian culture and how lei day has become a large part of local life.

Oral and written information is combined in this book to reveal the significance of making and wearing floral lei and the role lei play in Hawaiian rituals and dance. Within these pages, eighty-five flowers and plants are highlighted for their use in traditional lei construction including their Hawaiian name, botanical information, and wisdom from Hawaiian legends and chants to illustrate special meanings and uses of the plants.

LIBRARY CLOSED on GOOD FRIDAY and EASTER

The Library will be closed on Friday (4/19) and Sunday (4/21) in observance of of Good Friday and Easter, respectively. However, the Library will be open during its regular hours on Saturday (4/20), 11am-4pm.

International Extravaganza Book Display

 Twice a year, Chaminade University of Honolulu hosts an International Extravaganza – a night where different cultures are shared and celebrated via food, dance, and music to create a stronger community and develop friendships that will hopefully last a lifetime.

This year, the Sullivan Family Library is participating in the International Extravaganza activities by hosting a book display to compliment the different groups participating in the event.  Books representing the clubs are currently on display near the library circulation desk. Stop by the Sullivan Family Library and learn more about the different cultures you can experience that night.

April is National Poetry Month!

Visit the Sullivan Family Library to see our selected poetry books currently on display in celebration of National Poetry Month.

Held every April since 1996, National Poetry Month was created by the Academy of American Poets in hopes of increasing public awareness and appreciation of poetry in the United States.  During the month, businesses, libraries, and schools hold events and create displays related to poetry.
